The Technological Literacy Plan of Extremadura (PAT) is an initiative that the Regional Government of Extremadura has been promoting since 1999, entrusting its management to the Association of Adult Education Centres of Extremadura. It has two fundamental principles: to get all the municipal areas of Extremadura connected and to guarantee the technological literacy of all its citizens, regardless of where they live.

Since its was started PAT has been working to encourage and train the adult population of Extremadura (over 16s) to use Information and Communication Technologies, through the use of an educational model in technological literacy, active and dynamic, that goes way beyond the simple acquisition of skills to be able to use a computer or get online and that, therefore, greatly transcends the field of IT. In this way the technological literacy workshops do not just provide participants with skills and knowledge, they also raise awareness and foster involvement and new attitudes towards these new methods of communication.

PAT has a network of 45 New Centres of Knowledge (NCC), located in rural areas, in Women’s centres and in socially disadvantaged areas of towns and cities. In all of them people work for the socialisation of knowledge as the best tool to aid access to equal opportunities in this new era.

The “New Centres of Knowledge of Extremadura”, implemented by the Technological Literacy Plan, is a free programme co-financed by the European Social Fund, the Second Vice-president and Department of Economy, Commerce and Innovation and the Department of Equality and Employment of the Regional Government of Extremadura, managed by the Association of Adult Education Centres of Extremadura (AUPEX).
