Jaime Lerner, former mayor of Curitiba (Brasil), is an architect and Urban Planner, the founder of Jaime Lerner’s associated architects Institute, the president of the International Union of Architects (UIA), from 2002 to 2005. He has been the mayor of the city of Curitiba three times and, he was the leader of the urban revolution that turned the city into a national and international reference concerning urban planning, mainly regarding transport, environment, social programmes and urban projects. He has been governor of Paraná State twice and, he has undergone important economical and social transformations with policies on industrialization, infrastructures, empowerment and improvement of life quality in the country and in the city. His work has been awarded by several prizes and international titles, stressing in particular the “Maximum Awards “from the United Nations for Environment (1990), UNICEF “Criança e Paz” (Child and Peace) (in 1996), in 2001, the World Technology Award for Transportation, in 2002 Sir Robert Mathew Prize for the Improvement of Quality of Human Settlements”, given by the International Union of Architects, and the Volvo Environment Prize in 2004.
